What we Teach: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu What can one expect from a beginner's class? What happens in a class:
A regular Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class involves warm up, stretching followed by drills and or technique study, then sparring and warm down approximately 1.5 - 2 hours per session. Sparring is optional, although we encourage all members to train with the higher belts and with partners of the same level, to improve their skill, and application of the techniques. BJJ is a Martial Art where what you learn can be practiced on a resisting opponent at various levels of intensity to improve the effectiveness, application and reality of the techniques. Regular training can be with a Gi (Kimono) or with No Gi (Shorts, rash vest, sandol, T-shirt). Training is at your own pace; persons of all ages can attend. For your own improvement and cardiovascular fitness you are encouraged to take part in all the exercises. If you are looking for self-defense, fitness, flexibility, core muscle strength, discipline and other health related benefits, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers all the above and more. The environment is very safe for students and we ensure that safety and enjoyment is a priority when you train. At first the training may seem very difficult as it takes time to get used to working off the ground while being stretched and compressed in various positions. But after a short while your body and spirit adjust to the challenge Above all else have fun. Gi Class description Also called “Kimono”, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi's are much thicker than a regular martial arts uniform. The BJJ Gi will generally have a very thick collar, double or thriple layered chest and extra heavy material. Gi's are commonly listed as "single weave", "double weave" or "gold” weave". This generally refers to the thickness of the gi. The gi in BJJ can be used to choke your opponent using your own gi or your opponent's gi against himself. It is also used to control an opponent for a variety of moves take downs, sweeps and submissions. A Gi is usually sold as a set with a jacket and pants .It could be white, blue, black etc. Most Gi's do not come with belts. We are the official distributor of Atama Gis from Brazil and also stock Dunro and Profight Gi's. No Gi and MMA ( Mixed Martial Arts ) Class descriptionNo Gi also called Submission Wrestling. In this class we only wear shorts and shirts. No GI class consists of Brazilian Jiu Jtsu, Wrestling and Judo techniques on the mat. Jointlocks (arm, foot, kneebars, wrist locks) chokes, take downs and sweeps are taught. Generally described as a bit more higher pace then gi class. Sometimes we may even work on basic strikes and street self defense techniques. Mixed Martial Arts is a combination of BJJ, Muay Thai, Wrestling and Judo. No Gi classes are a lot of fun and a great compliment for Gi training. Open Mat Description Non-instructional class. Students can work together, go over techniques from the past week or work on specific moves they wish to improve. It is an open training environment and the students get together and set the type of training they wish to work on be it sparring , drilling, technique study etc. An Instructor may or may not be present. Judo Judo meaning “gentle way”, is a modern Japanese martial art and combat sport, that originated in Japan in the late nineteenth century. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to throw one’s opponent to the ground submit or hold them to obtain determined scores.
It is very closely related to Brazilian Jui Jitsu and by mixing the ground techniques of BJJ with the throwing techniques of Judo you can have a very well rounded and skilled fighter who can attack from both positions.
Strikes and thrusts (by hands and feet) - as well as weapons defences - are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori) the same rules apply for Braziliian Jiu Jitsu.
Ultimately, the philosophy and subsequent live training developed for judo became the model for almost all modern Japanese martial arts that developed from "traditional" schools (koryu).
Practitioners of judo are called judoka. Students have the oppotunity to learn from one of the Philippines most decorated Judo Instructors six degree Kodakan ( World Headquaters of Judo in Japan ) Black belt John Baylon 8 times SEA gold medalist, 2 x Olympian and World Masters Medalist. Muay Thai
